Wishing all you beautiful, amazing mamas a most glorious week-end!!!

Part of my "mama's day" gift was an afternoon sans kids yesterday. It was a gorgeous day here and, with journal in hand, I wandered down to the beach and soaked up the peace and sunshine.....Ahhhhh......

As I sat on a log watching the waves and listening to the gulls, what came up for me was how grateful I am for the incredible gift of motherhood. More than all the education in the world, they have opened my heart to realms of possibility.....

My kids are my greatest teachers. I often feel like I am living with 3 little zen masters 24/7. That said, they serve as constant inspiration to keep evolving and growing. They remind me to breathe, let go and have fun. (As I write this I am sitting in the middle of a "staw" house...the boys are paddling around the kitchen in laundry baskets....and, yah, it's all good!!! LOL :) They also remind me (on a minute by minute basis) to remain compassionate, flexible and patient...... Now that they are getting older, they also mirror back to me qualities that I really do want/need to work on.... Letting go of "perfectionism", being more organized, being in the moment....etc...etc.....:)

With all this in mind, I intend to be present with my kids (and get off the computer -- LOL :)) and just enjoy their beutiful spirits, the sunshine and garden this mama's day!!!

That said, there have been several "punctuation marks" along my path that have caused me to grow/evolve by leaps and bounds.... Here are just a few......

Earth day musing.....

Today is "earth day" and I wish there was something wonderfully inspiring and monumental that I could write or do that could convey my utter gratitude and love of the earth and all her inhabitants.... After "being with" this idea all morning the one "single thing" that I have happened upon is JOY. How can I (we) express my (our) love and gratitude for all the gifts of the earth? Express JOY!!! We can walk barefoot through the grass, hug trees, dance in the rain and climb mountains just because they are there. We can plant flowers, because "the earth laughs in flowers"; we can gather together and sing and love one another and know that we, too, are part of the divine wonders of the earth! I know this isn't a "new" thought, but it is something that, for me, has been difficult to really internalize and make real. Though, I must admit that I am learning to let go more and just show my gratitude with JOY, it is still somewhat of a challenge to not want to "save the world"! GULP! Having been somewhat of a "lorax" all my life, I am learning that there is a balance between speaking up and out and just letting the wisdom of everything unfold.... Everyday, I am becoming more comfortable living this paradox...It's all good. :) Anywhoo......Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for mother earth and all that is....soooo, I will spend my day planting flowers, walking barefoot, hugging trees and singing with my kiddos!!! Why Eat Local? 13 Lucky Reasons.

1. Taste the difference.

At a farmers’ market, most local produce has been picked inside of 24 hours. It comes to you ripe, fresh, and with its full flavor, unlike supermarket food that may have been picked weeks or months before. Close-to-home foods can also be bred for taste, rather than withstanding the abuse of shipping or industrial harvesting. Many of the foods we ate on the 100-Mile Diet were the best we’d ever had.

2. Know what you’re eating.

Buying food today is complicated. What pesticides were used? Is that corn genetically modified? Was that chicken free range or did it grow up in a box? People who eat locally find it easier to get answers. Many build relationships with farmers whom they trust. And when in doubt, they can drive out to the farms and see for themselves.

3. Meet your neighbors.

Local eating is social. Studies show that people shopping at farmers’ markets have 10 times more conversations than their counterparts at the supermarket. Join a community garden and you’ll actually meet the people you pass on the street. Sign up with the 100-Mile Diet Society; we’ll be working to connect people in your area who care about the same things you do.

4. Get in touch with the seasons.

When you eat locally, you eat what’s in season. You’ll remember that cherries are the taste of summer. Even in winter, comfort foods like squash soup and pancakes just make sense–a lot more sense than flavorless cherries from the other side of the world.

5. Discover new flavors.

Ever tried sunchokes? How about purslane, quail eggs, yerba mora, or tayberries? These are just a few of the new (to us) flavors we sampled over a year of local eating. Our local spot prawns, we learned, are tastier than popular tiger prawns. Even familiar foods were more interesting. Count the types of pear on offer at your supermarket. Maybe three? Small farms are keeping alive nearly 300 other varieties–while more than 2,000 more have been lost in our rush to sameness .

6. Explore your home.

Visiting local farms is a way to be a tourist on your own home turf, with plenty of stops for snacks.

7. Save the world.

A study in Iowa found that a regional diet consumed 17 times less oil and gas than a typical diet based on food shipped across the country. The ingredients for a typical British meal, sourced locally, traveled 66 times fewer “food miles.” Or we can just keep burning those fossil fuels and learn to live with global climate change, the fiercest hurricane seasons in history, wars over resources…

8. Support small farms.

We discovered that many people from all walks of life dream of working the land–maybe you do too. In areas with strong local markets, the family farm is reviving. That’s a whole lot better than the jobs at Wal-Mart and fast-food outlets that the globalized economy offers in North American towns.

9. Give back to the local economy.

A British study tracked how much of the money spent at a local food business stayed in the local economy, and how many times it was reinvested. The total value was almost twice the contribution of a dollar spent at a supermarket chain .

10. Be healthy.

Everyone wants to know whether the 100-Mile Diet worked as a weight-loss program. Well, yes, we lost a few pounds apiece. More importantly, though, we felt better than ever. We ate more vegetables and fewer processed products, sampled a wider variety of foods, and ate more fresh food at its nutritional peak. Eating from farmers’ markets and cooking from scratch, we never felt a need to count calories.

11. Create memories.

A friend of ours has a theory that a night spent making jam–or in his case, perogies–with friends will always be better a time than the latest Hollywood blockbuster. We’re convinced.

12. Have more fun while traveling.

Once you’re addicted to local eating, you’ll want to explore it wherever you go. On a recent trip to Mexico, earth-baked corn and hot-spiced sour oranges led us away from the resorts and into the small towns. Somewhere along the line, a mute magician gave us a free show over bowls of lime soup in a little cantina.

13. And always remember:

Yes, I am Canadian, but was inspired by this movie! I watched it online a couple weeks ago and am inclined to post it here as I sadly contemplate the outcome of the Canadian election results....Sigh....:(

Yes, it is all part of the shift. The old must whither and fall away before a new and life sustaining system can come into being; however, I can not help but feel frustrated by the great apathy, fear and sleepiness....

How did you start on your spiritual path?

I was born...:)

No, seriously, I have always felt deeply spiritual.

I begged my admittedly non-religious mother to attend Sunday school when I was 4. I drew pictures of Jesus surfing and was generally disappointed with the experience.... Too much judgement and posing and talk of sin...sigh....

When I was 7 my grandfather died and I started talking to my higher self a lot...As I recall, this was more fulfilling but I still felt deeply curious and alone in my wondering... And where, oh where did a kid of 7 get the notion that she should talk to her higher self...hmmm...;)

In my teens I read a lot -- Edgar Cayce, Shirley MacLaine, Chakra healing, astrology, the Bible, the Tao. Everytime I read something new, it was like remembering who I really was. Still, I felt alone and odd in my conservative surroundings. I did not have people around me who were open to discussing spiritual matters in a non-conventional way....

University brought with it a host of cool and interesting folks with whom I could philosophize, but still it was more about the head than the heart....

Then, I became a MOM and the rest, as they say, is history.

My heart broke open. My ego started to wither. I became overwhelmed with love and gratitude for my baby, the earth, the flowers, the sun and my morning coffee! :)

The spiral dance of this human journey is amazing. I am learning, growing and evolving everyday and I am so grateful to have others with whom to share the wonder and beauty of it all!!!

Yesterday, my grandfather, who lived next door to me for the past 8 years, died after years of asthma and breathing difficulties.

He was able to be at home until hours before he left this bodily incarnation. My granmma, bless her tender heart, nursed him until there was nothing more she could do. His last moment of consciousness was yesterday morning, when he held gramma's hand and told her he loved her. After that he drifted off to sleep...

A fun-loving, family focussed man, Grampa was very different from me but also so similar.

He loved to tease and joke around, but had a kind and gentle heart. A simple person, of the depression era, he never "wanted" for material things. He loved and cherished the homemade cards and drawings the kids would make him. Although he was quiet and somewhat private, he did love to entertain close friends and family. I think I disappointed him greatly when I decided to become a vegetarian 16 years ago; he always wanted to share a "great big steak" with me! :)

Yes, grampa was a gem. He will be greatly missed...

Throughout this experience I have tried to remain fully present and open to the moment. Acting from my essence rather than my ego has been my goal....Here I am in a true exercise in letting go.....It is what it is.....

Today, my beautiful, wise and sensitive middle son turned 6. He is heartbroken over the loss (as is my daughter); and I wish there was something that I could do to help soothe the hurt... But instead of "fixing" I will just focus on being and loving.

Tommorow, my husband and I "March" forward into year 34.....

And so it goes...
