What was your favorite childhood story?

Posted on Nov 9th, 2007 by earthmama : The Sunshine Coach earthmama
This is in Response to the Questions and Reflections for November 09, 2007:

I had two.

The first was The Little Prince by Antoine St. Exupery

Ostensibly, a children's fable, the book is a beautiful allegory. It is filled with boundless beauty and wisdom. I carry it in my heart always.

"One sees clearly only with the heart. Anything essential is invisible to the eyes."

The second was the Velveteen Rabbit.

It is lovely and always made me cry buckets!!!!

"It doesn't happen all at once," said the Skin Horse. "You become. It takes a long time. That's why it doesn't happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in your joints and very shabby. But these things don't matter at all, because once you are Real you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand."

- The Velveteen Rabbit

Love makes us all real, doesn't it???

I love the part, “Generally, by the time you are real..”  That was the only part of the VR that I knew, and I had that part of the quote pasted up on my fridge for many years.

I am going to buy a copy of the Velveteen Rabbit for my grandchildrens' library, (Alex 7, Samantha 3-1/2, and Grace 2 yrs. old) along with “The Places you will Go”and  “The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein.

Before I visit them, I go to Value Village (thrift store) and bring them lots of new books.  That is the first thing they ask for when I come in the door.  Loving books is a great gift.
Gracie runs and gets a book, and waiting to climb in my lap, her little feet are doing a River Dance in anticipation.  Joy!

And thank you for that beautiful link for the VR.  I read the story for the first time and grew misty eyed.  So happy to have read the whole thing at last.

This response truly touched my heart!  Sometimes it's too easy to forget the treasure of wisdom hiding in plain sight in these beautiful childrens' stories.  What can be better than being REAL?

Thank you all for stopping by!!! :)

Mimi – you are soo welcome for the link! I am sure your grandkids will love the VR as well as the Places You'll Go and the Giving Tree (2 of my own kids favorites!).  We actually have the Dr. Suess quote “Oh, the places you'll go” stencilled above our front door!!! LOL :) Oh, and I LOVE Value Village, too!!! There are so, so many treasured to be found there!!

Aley – you are sooo REAL!!! Thanks so much for sharing all your genuine beauty with us.

ohmsmom – soo nice to hear from you!!!! I haven't actually read the little prince to my own kids yet; though I think the time is actually pretty right to do so… I'll have to take down my copy, too!!!

Mamakat – Isn't it amazing what wisdom can be unearthed in children's stories???? Personally, kids lit contains some of my all time favorites…. Bring on Ramona Quimby, Laura Ingalls, the Lorax and Green Eggs and Ham….. I love them all Sam I am!!!! LOL :D

Much love,
S:)
